Hello, we are Charlotte and Michael Thompson and together we run Copenhagen based, TøjProduktionsLab.

At TøjProduktionsLab we combine a workshop and a Fabric Agency business. We are currently exclusive agents for Carrington Fleet , John Kaldor, Basinghall and Biddle Sawyer Silks in Denmark and/or Scandinavia. We also partner with a fully certified GOTS/SKAL Organic/Fairtrade supplier, and Belgian luxury fabric supplier Van Den Heuvel. Our client list, for both fabrics and garment constructions consultation, includes some of the leading names in Danish Fashion and Fashion Education.

Weaves • Natural Fibres • Man Made Fibres

WEAVES are often mistaken for types of fabrics. eg satin is a type of weave, and does not denote fabric content and can be woven from silk, polyester, acetate, or even blends of fibres. Different fibre content contributes to the hand and drape of the satin fabric.

BLENDS consist of two or more fibres and, ideally, are supposed to take on the characteristics of each fibre in the blend. The burning test can be used but the fabric content will be an assumption.

THE BURN TEST CAUTION. WARNING. BE CAREFUL! This should only be done by skilled burners! Have a bucket of water to hand and best to burn in metallic container. Bucket for example.

To identify unknown fabric a simple burn test can be done. This will determine if the fabric is a natural fibre, man made fibre, or a blend of natural and man made fibres. This elimination process will give information necessary to decide the care of the fabric.

WARNING: All fibres will burn! Asbestos treated fibres are, for the most part fire proof. Use a small piece of fabric only. Hold the fabric with tweezers, not your fingers. Burn over a metal dish with soda in the bottom or even water in the bottom of the dish. Some fabrics will ignite and melt. The result is burning drips which can adhere to fabric or skin and cause a serious burn.

NATURAL FIBRES

Hair-like materials with continuous filaments or are in discrete elongated pieces, similar to pieces of thread. Spun into filaments, thread, or rope and can be used as a component of composite materials. Can also be matted into sheets to make products such as paper or felt.

Two types of Natural Fibres: NATURAL FIBRE & CELLULOSE FIBRE

COTTON

Cool, soft, comfortable, principal clothing fibre of the world. From the cotton plants seed pod. Fibre absorbs and releases perspiration quickly allowing the fabric to breathe. Cotton can stand high temperatures, takes dyes easily and is very hardwearing.

Cotton is often blended with other fibres such as polyester, linen, wool, to blend the best properties of each fibre.
Since cotton wrinkles, polyester was added to give it wash and wear properties for a busy world.
Burn test results Cotton: Burns with a steady flame and smells like burning leaves. Ash left is easily crumbled. Small samples of burning cotton can be blown out as you would a candle.

LINEN

A plant fibre, just like cotton, but linens individual component plant fibres are long where cotton fibres are short.

Burn test results Linen: Takes longer to ignite than cotton. The fabric closest to the ash is very brittle. Easily extinguished by blowing on it.

HEMP

Hemp is enjoying a renaissance in fashion and furnishing. Made from the stems of the plant. Hemp fabric is similar to linen in both feel and appearance and withstands water better than any other textile product.

RAMIE

Inexpensive fibre from an East Asian plant and can be spun or woven into a fabric. Often mistaken for linen and is a bast of plant fibre. Natural white in color, it has a high luster and is unusually resistance to bacteria and molds. Has excellent abrasion resistance and is three to five times stronger than cotton and twice as strong as flax.

JUTE

Jute is a glossy fibre from a plant. Is seen most often in sacks, rope, twine, and as backing on carpeting.

WOOL

A protein fibre whose individual hair fibres are shorter than silk and weave of the fabrics is generally looser than silk for example.

Burn test results Wool: The flame is steady but more difficult to keep burning. The smell of burning wool is like burning hair.

SILK/SOIE

The strongest natural fibre. Versatile, Wearabile and Comfortable. One of the oldest textile fibres known to man and was sold for its weight in gold in the Roman Empire. Used by the Chineese since 27 BC.

Versatile, Wearabile and Comfortable. Due too high absorption rate good in summer or winter and easy to dye.

Silk retains its shape, drapes well, caresses the figure, and shimmers with a luster all its own.

Burn test results Silk: A protein fibre and usually burns readily, not necessarily with a steady flame and smells like burning hair. The ash is easily crumbled. Not as easily extinguished as cotton or linen.

MAN MADE Fibres

Also known as synthetic fibres, the result of extensive research to improve upon naturally occurring animal and plant fibres. Created by forcing, usually through extrusion, fibre forming materials through holes (called spinnerets) into the air, forming a thread.
Four synthetic polymers dominate the market

NYLON
POLYESTER
ACRYLIC
POLYOLEFIN

These four account for approximately 98% by volume of synthetic fibre production. Polyester alone accounts for around 60%.

ACETATE is made from cellulose (wood fibres), technically cellulose acetate.

Burn test results Acetate: Acetate burns readily with a flickering flame that cannot be easily extinguished. The burning cellulose drips and leaves a hard ash. The smell is similar to burning wood chips.

ACRYLIC technically acrylonitrile is made from natural gas and petroleum.

Burn test results Acrylic: Acrylics burn readily due to the fibre content and the lofty, air filled pockets. A match or cigarette dropped on an acrylic blanket can ignite the fabric which will burn rapidly unless extinguished. The ash is hard. The smell is acrid or harsh.

NYLON is a polyamide made from petroleum.

Burn test results Nylon: Nylon melts and then burns rapidly if the flame remains on the melted fibre. If you can keep the flame on the melting nylon, it smells like burning plastic.

POLYESTER is a polymer produced from coal, air, water, and petroleum products.

Burn test results Polyester: Polyester melts and burns at the same time, the melting, burning ash can bond quickly to any surface it drips on including skin. The smoke from polyester is black with a sweetish smell. The extinguished ash is hard.

RAYON is a regenerated cellulose fibre which is almost pure cellulose. Rayon burns rapidly and leaves only a slight ash. The burning smell is close to burning leaves.
